Im impressed with how well Rob is handling it in the comment section. I thought The Drive might be a good escape and alternative from the FP, especially with Patrick George over there, but goddamn. That comment section is a cesspool.

In any event, y eah, the comments there can be pretty brutal. For what it’s worth, while I’m sure there’s worse in the dark corners of the internet, the site where I see the most vile comments is the Houston Chronicle’s page .

Seriously, in my experience, that term is a favorite of wannabe Nazis. I wager Holland’s piece was c ross-posted somewhere vile. Check the histories of many of the usernames - no history. Possibly even the same person or small group.

For local news, I read our NBC affiliate. They turned off comments a few years ago, and it’s great. I don’t understand why news sites feel the need to involve the readers. Just do news.

Robb’s a good dude, I’ve worked for him. It’s not exaggerating to say that he was the only black dude in the paddock, and the amount of shit he’s had to put up with is off the charts. In almost 15 years of racing gigs, I’ve only been on a team with one black mechanic, in a sea of more overtly racist white guys than I can count. Glad to see him call it out, though I’m unfortunately not surprised by the commentary.

The Drive (and TWZ) is a cesspool in the comments. They’ve crapped on Steph and Patrick . There’s a pretty big hatred for any ex-Jalop  staff and Jalop commentators in TDs comments.

I’d very much debate certain FP article comment sections from late May to mid June were way way more toxic then what I was reading in that article . It’s the antithesis of the G/O M echo chamber.

The Drive is usually not delving so far into societal or political issues as Jalopnik is straying, especially of recent. I think it’s a refuge of moderates to conservatives that got fed up with Jalopnik. So this is also a reaction of GTFO out of our safe space, as well as akin to Tom Cottons NYT op-ed. I think Jalopnik would have been a better platform for this article .

I don’t have an issue with the article overall . Robb makes some valid points and observations. I feel some can be debated in what’s the right way forward to deal with the issues outline .

I mean, done well readers can add insight, because the reader base is going have a broader base of knowledge than even the most expert reporter (no one can know everything). But left unmoderated, they quickly seem to become cesspools.

Though honestly, there are a fair number  of just horrible , troubled folks... I was talking with my cousin after his father, (my dad’s twin brother,) passed last year. I hadn’t really talked to him for years - we weren’t close though I had looked up to him when we were kids . And he’s basically a nazi now . And seriously, that was a good article. I cant emphasize that enough. Yours is a voice that needs to be heard and listened to. But the comments there make me waffle between “fuck the drive, don’t bother with that shit”, and “time to start commenting and clean that place up a bit.” There's some good writer's over there, and I got faith in PG.
